6 Whys and Ways to be an Optimist

The dictionary definition of optimism is “a tendency to expect the best possible outcome or dwell on the most hopeful aspects of a situation”. Sounds good right? Well, your answer will depend on who you are. In a general sense, people can be divided into being mainly optimistic or pessimistic. This will in turn affect other areas in your life. How you view the world is crucial for your well being. How you to choose to face your own reality is vital.

For some, being optimistic comes naturally, for others it comes very hard if at all. Whichever category you fall into, my aim is not to convince you to be an optimist. I will simply present some of the benefits and then it’s your choice.

Being an optimist will support you to…

Accomplish more
You will be able to see beyond obstacles that others may consider insurmountable. By extracting the positives of nearly every situation there is the possibility of learning something and not giving up. Optimism gives you the strength to ersevere rather than give up at the first stumbling block. Tenacity and determination combined with the resolve to overcome any obstacles will help you achieve what you want.

Become more popular
Attitudes are contagious and optimistic people are a pleasure to be around. Others will enjoy being around you and as far as the Law of Attraction goes, you will attract more similar people into your life. They may not be able to explain what it is about you but they will recognise the feel good factor you exude.

Live Longer
The BBC published a report entitled “Optimistic women ‘live longer’“. The research was conducted by a group of US scientists who studied 100,000 women. The results showed that “Optimistic women had a 9% lower risk of developing heart disease and a 14% lower risk of dying from any cause after more than eight years of follow-up.” The concept of this research isn’t targeted at women only though. The body and brain are undoubtedly connected so it is not surprising that a negative mind will over time have a negative influence on the performance of the body.

3 Ways to Become an Optimist

Focus on the Possible Pessimists will focus on all impossibilities so do the opposite. Instead of allowing yourself to become overwhelmed by a particular task or situation, break it down. Take bite sized actions that bring you closer to your goal.

New thinking
Rid your vocabulary of negative words. For example, rather than saying that something was bad luck, say it wasn’t good luck. It is not denying reality, it is just seeing things from a different perspective.

Get Inspired
Read inspiring stories. By reading success stories you will be reminded that others before you have overcome challenges. Others have also faced difficulties but they persisted and went on to achieve their dreams. So can you.

Do you agree with the saying that “it’s better to be an optimist who is sometimes wrong than a pessimist who is always right”? I certainly do. Optimism starts with you. The glass is always half full and it’s never too late!

Are you an optimist or a pessimist? I hope to hear from you.

The absolute best advice I could give to someone is to read “What to say when you talk to your self” by Helmstetter. That is, if you want to become a more positive thinker. I wrote a pretty in depth review about this on my blog a couple months ago after I finished it. Great book, and it changed my thinking patterns still to this day.
