What Type of Friend are You?

The recent release of “Sex & the City 2” got me thinking about friendship. Good friends are not easy to find and should be treasured. Every friend offers something different which in turn makes you a better person.

As we are all unique, can we categorize our friends into groups? As per a recent article in Philosophy Now by Dr Timothy Madigan, Aristotle divided friendship into 3 different types:

  • Friendship of utility: mutually advantageous to both parties (co-workers, business partners)
  • Friendship of pleasure: enjoy spending time together (book club members, work out buddy)
  • Friendship of good: tend to be lifelong and people value each other’s virtues.
  • Here, I am going to look at the Friendships of Good category and suggest 5 (plus 1) types of friends we should all have in our lives.

5 Types of Friends We All Need

Realist This friend is essential for 2 main reasons. Firstly, their sly remarks and comments will provide entertainment value and secondly they will tell you what you need to hear and not what you what to hear. They can be a handful sometimes but will be extremely loyal. They are the ones who end up saying what others may be thinking. Their honesty may be brutal but they want the best for you.

Idealist No matter how annoying their boss is, they still like their job, despite the endless break ups, true love is on its way and despite the suffering in the world they still believe in the inherent good in people. They may be naive at times but they are great to balance out any negative thoughts you may have and make you see the bright side of life.

Goofy They find humour and adventure in the smallest of things. Their laughter and zest for life are contagious. They are able to laugh at most situations and you will be crying from laughter in no time. They will be the one you call when you are in need of a good distraction. You will spend spend hours catching up and they’ll tell you the most bizarre and hilarious stories.

Timeless It feels like you have known this person forever (maybe you have, maybe you haven’t). You may not have much in common and spend months without being in touch. However, when you see each other there is always a lot to talk about and that warm fuzzy feeling is there. You enjoy each other’s company and like hearing about what has been going on. This person will always be in your life, even if you only speak to them at Christmas.

BFFYour Best Friend Forever. This person has been your friend through the good times and the bad. You can spend hours on the phone and not notice the time fly by. You always have a great time together even if you’re doing nothing. You talk about everything and understand each other. They are the one you turn to when you need consoling. Being with them makes you feel happy.

Yourself Remember you’re the best friend you could have especially as you could also be your own worst enemy. Treat yourself with the same dedication and devotion that you reserve for your closest friends and remember to have fun with yourself.

    By Unknown Author

We need friends for many reasons,
No matter what the day or season…

We need friends to comfort us when we are sad,
And to laugh with when we are glad!

We need friends to give us good advice,
Someone we can count on to treat us nice.

We need friends to remember us when we have passed
Sharing memories that will always last.

We need friends to help us solve our troubles
And to share good times so the joy is doubled!
